Movie Maker
This is the culminating project for our Inventors and Artists Expeditionary Unit. In this activity, you will use knowledge gained from the journey and review writing skills for the upcoming PSSA's. But most of all you will have FUN!
Part 1: A clear picture of the Finish Line
In this part you will view finished examples of projects and help you determine what Genre of narrative you are going to write.
- While on the MacBook Pro computer, click on the iMovie icon in the "Dock"
- Click on "File" then "New Trailer"
- Watch the demos of each type of movie trailer then click "cancel" to exit program the "Command Q" to close.
- You and your team member must now pick a "Genre" for the story that you will write.
- Match your story Genre to one iMovie Trailer type.
- This will give you an idea of what your final project will look like.
Part 2: The Screenplay (Narrative Outline)
In this part you will create a graphic organizer for a Narrative essay.
- You and your team member(s) will be writing separate narratives, but making one movie trailer together. Therefore, your stories must be similar. They must have a similar setting and main characters must have the same names.
- Print out 1 copy of this Narrative story graphic organizer. Download and print the file below.

- Using the iPad and Green Screen, pose in the position you would like to be in for your poster.
- Take picture and upload images to iPhoto
- With Mr. Conkle's help open up both the picture of you using green screen and your background image.
- Working with the Green Screen image first: Rename the background layer.
- Click on "Select" from the top menu, then on "Color Range" from drop down menu.
- Use the "eyedropper" to select the green background. Then click "delete" to remove all green from image.
- You may have to duplicate layer several times to reduce the "invisible" person problem.
- Merge layers into one, then use the "Magic Wand" tool to remove any excess green.
Part 4: The Screenplay (Narrative Rough Draft & Revision)
In this part you will write your rough draft and revise your Screenplay/Narrative Essay

Part 5: The Screenplay (Narrative Final Draft)
In this part you will rewrite or type your final draft of your Screenplay/Narrative essay. You must complete and turn this in before you start Part 6: iMovie Trailer (Story board)
In this part you will create your trailer file, print out you storyboard, and lay out the scenes that you will be filming. *While you are waiting your turn on the MacBook, you may start Part 7: Informative Essay
- With your team member, watch the following 2 videos.
- The first video is an overview/demonstration of the steps that you will be following today.
- The second video will describe and demonstrate the various types of video "shots" that you will be filming.
- You should refer back to this second video, throughout your production time.
- While on the MacBook Pro computer, click on the iMovie icon in the "Dock"
- Click on "File" then "New Trailer"
- Select the trailer type you are going to create. Then click the "create" button in the lower right corner.
- Next in the drop down menu, next to "Name," title your project. Use your first name(s)
- In the "Event" box, click on the arrows and select "Group __." (The group that you are part of)
- Then click "ok."
- At the bottom of the page, complete the first "tab" titled "Outline." Just complete this quickly, you can always change it later.
- Next, Click on the middle tab "Storyboard."
Part 7: The Informative Essay (Graphic Organizer)
In this part you will write an Informative Essay. Your Essay must be at least 3 paragraphs long and follow all the rules of writing we have covered this year. You will work on this essay while you continue to create your iMovie trailer.

Part 7: The Informative Essay (Rough Draft)
In this part you will write a Rough Draft of your Informative Essay. Your Essay must be at least 3 paragraphs long and follow all the rules of writing we have covered this year. You will work on this essay while you continue to create your iMovie trailer.
In this part you will film the scenes for your iMovie trailer.
- You will need your scene cards from Part 6
- We are going to focus on the first scene, but this process is the same for all your scenes.
- If your first scene calls for a "Landscape," then you have 3 options: Option 1 Draw and color a picture that fits with your story, Option 2 film a landscape that fits your story with the iPad, Option 3 find a "landscape" image on Google images. (If you use google, you MUST have safe search on and on your notecard write down the name of the site that you found your image on. Google is not a site it is a search engine.
- If your first scene does not call for a landscape, then you will have to find or draw a background image then green screen your actors onto it, or film your actors directly using your surroundings as a background.
